As I mentioned yesterday, I am officially in training for the Turkey Trot. Guess what else? I think that I’ve convinced my dad to run with me. I asked my sister, but she said I was a moron. I’m so glad Dad doesn’t think so! I’m also blessed that my friend Lisa has said she will go with me if I decide to do it. I haven’t yet told her that I’ve decided, because she’s an old pro at this and I don’t want to let her down if I fall apart during training.
I am following the ‘Couch to 5K’ program and after day one, I can say that it’s working well. I really want to go out this morning, but my day is pretty hectic, so I’m not sure that I’ll be able to. Besides, it’s super muddy and I don’t want the girl to get dirty before school. Yes, the kids are working with me! The boy is so proud, he was thinking last night of ways he could help me achieve this goal. His maturing masculinity somehow reared its ugly head when he suddenly exclaimed that he knew how to make me get through it. “I’ll put a pumpkin pie in the wagon and run ahead of you, since it’s on Thanksgiving and you’ll do anything for pie.” Nice, son. Of course, his boyhood innocence shone through when he looked genuinely confused when I got angry.
The training is set to build up your endurance in 9 weeks. I only have 7.5, but since I live on a gravel road with hills, I think that it will balance itself out. Here’s the plan for this week:
3 workouts (spaced evenly):
Brisk 5 minute walk
Jog for 60 seconds, walk for 90 seconds
Repeat jog/walk combo for 20 minutes
It’s not hard! Of course, I always happened to be uphill on the jog and my poor leg (from it’s possible fracture this summer) felt like it would snap in half. Oh well, it needs some therapy. The strange thing is that when I pulled my watch out of the drawer to time myself, it still worked. It had been in that drawer for over a year and the battery dies nearly every eight months. Five minutes before my run/walk was over, my watch died. Is that a sign?
Is there anyone in SWMO that would like to join me at the Turkey Trot? All proceeds benefit the Developmental Center of the Ozarks, Ozarks Food Harvest, and Springfield-Greene County Park Board’s Scholarship Fund.
All participants are asked to donate 3 canned food items. I will be accepting donations from GTS Readers to take to the race. Also, if anyone has a business that would like to sponsor my readers at the run, please feel free to contact me.
You can view full details about the event here.

Oh look! I've recruited people! I'm set to start week 2 (I should have worked out last night but I was too tired).
Does that mean you're going to run with me on Thanksgiving?
No, no. I only have one 5K in me, because really, I hate running! I ran on the elliptical last night after the first session, I decided to do a second one. I then realized that I moved the machine so much I was about to hit a bookcase! Oops! That ended my second session.
