Tracfone- inexpensive, no-contract cell service

by Alicia on January 29, 2009

With everyone looking to cut costs, I would like to detail how to cut your cell service bill. If you don’t use your cell often, or would like a second line for your spouse or child, Tracfone is one of the most economical ways to go. I used Tracfone for over 10 years, and my husband’s phone is still a Tracfone.

You can purchase a discounted Tracfone at www.tracfone.com. You can select from very inexpensive, refurbished phones, starting at around $20, all the way up to the newer, more deluxe models. My advice is to get a phone with double minutes for life. Even though there will be a little higher upfront cost, the service will pay for itself. Occasionally, Walmart.com will offer some great deals on these phones, too. You can also purchase a phone at any discount retailer, such as Wal-Mart, Target, or Office Depot. The starting price for a basic phone is $10.00.

Texting plans may vary, depending on the phone you purchase. Some phones offer free incoming texts, others don’t. The standard rate is 1/3 of a minute per text message. If you anticipate using the phone primarily for texting, you should check the specifics of each phone.

Once you have purchased your phone, your first step is to obtain to activate your phone. You should do this online to reap the best benefits. If you sign your email address up for notifications, you will automatically receive 10 free minutes of airtime.

Once you have your phone activated, you need to see what promotions exist. The most comprehensive resource I have found is the FatWallet forums. This site offers a full listing of promotional codes, and tells you the last successful date. Keep in mind that as long as a date is within a few days, the code is probably still good. Once you see what promotions are available, you will know what size airtime card you will need to purchase. Currently, promotional code 14938 will add an additional 60 minutes to a 60 minute card. If you have a double minute phone, that code will add 180 minutes with the purchase of a 60 minute card.

In order to use the code, you must enter it online when redeeming your airtime card. Just visit www.tracfone.com, click on the ‘redeem airtime’ button across the top of the page. While you are redeeming the card, you should see a box labeled ‘promo code’ or ‘promotional code’. Simply enter the code you have chosen, and the minutes should automatically appear.

There are many other pre-paid cell services available, but Tracfone seems to offer the best promotions. I loved the service, but had to switch when my call volume increased. With these tips, you should be able to maintain cell service for very little expense.
