My Frugal Blunder

by Alicia on July 9, 2009

I’ve been told I have a 6th sense when it comes to deals. I know that if I decide I need (or want) something that I can always find it cheaper. Deals always just fall into my lap.

I have been on a quest for the perfect softball glove for weeks. I had my heart set on a Nike glove that was $85. Of course, in all my frugalness, $85 is very steep! I checked Ebay, online stores, used stores, and every sporting good store around. The cheapest I found it was $65.

Our first game is coming up on Monday, so I needed to get one and break it in. I didn’t want to make an extra trip into town to get one, so on Monday, I decided to find a decent sale, bite the bullet, and get a different but cheaper glove. It is a nice glove, but still pretty stiff- and not the Nike glove that my heart desired.

I waited until Tuesday night, got the glove out, and tried to play catch with it. My hubby took the tags off (against my wishes) and started the ‘breaking in process.’

Wednesday, we decided to head to the outlet malls after a swimming trip. We went into the Nike outlet to get school shoes for the kids. They had some great sales, the kids shoes were $14.99 a pair! From across the store, I spot my husband holding up the infamous Nike ballglove with a huge smirk on his face. I rushed to him, and had a major feeling of letdown when I saw the $65 price tag. Then he pointed to the sign that said ‘additional 20% off’. Better, but still not good enough to get me to spend that much money on a glove- especially when I had just spent $30 on one. Then, he flips the tag over to show me the clearance tag…. $11.99 BEFORE the additional 20% off!

I guess good things come to those who wait. I am thrilled to have the glove, but still angry with myself for purchasing the one for $30. Anyone want to buy a ball glove?

Have you had any frugal blunders lately? Something that you just burns you up inside because you KNOW that you could have gotten it cheaper? Post a comment below!

I completely understand!!! I needed a couple of new shirts and refused to spend the money on them. I hate ones that are see through and they must fit properly…but this week I got a $15/$15 from Ann Taylor Loft for my birthday! I ended up getting two shirts on sale AND BOGO for…$4.65!!! I think retail was like $24.50 for each shirt so I was pretty happy!

Great Job!

It seems that if you wait long enough, something will come along.. It's hard though, when it gets down to the wire.
