I’ve decided to entitle my random ramblings ‘Daily Dish’. While I believe that some things are better left untitled, in the blogging world you kind of have to title something if you ever hope to find it later.
I hope everyone had a Happy Halloween.. we had a great time! I was lucky enough to have it last for 3 days, because Princess Petunia’s class party was on Thursday, the Boy’s was on Friday, and yesterday was Halloween!
Princess Petunia’s party did not go as planned, but was quite an exciting event for our small town. After I dropped her off at preschool, I had an hour until the party started. I was not able to get the snacks finished ahead of time, so I went to a friend’s house to enlist her help. I was going to dress as a Surfin’ Santa- my Santa Suit in a Bermuda shirt and cargo shorts. Well, this friend happens to live next door to the bank in our small town of 600.
While we’re inside, we get a call that the bank has just been held up at gunpoint. Sure enough, there were police everywhere! It was time to leave, but the school was in lock down. Sure, I could have went up there and waited, but I was afraid to leave the house next door to the bank that just got robbed in a Santa suit. Needless to say, I didn’t get to dress up.
They apprehended the robber in a nearby town without incident.
The Boy’s class Halloween party was a riot! I love to dress up and do fun activities with the class, so when the party chairperson asked me to dress up as a mad scientist, I happily obliged. I have done the mad scientist party before, but had so much fun that I was glad to do it again. This party was done a little differently because we didn’t do any experiments, just felt gunky stuff and put on a show.
Halloween was a jam packed day, as are most of my weekends. For some reason, Halloween is not a holiday that business and organizations feel the need to close or cease operations. Actually, it seems just the opposite. Basketball season and youth deer season both began yesterday, along with the equipment turn in to symbolize the ending of football.
We got a very late start at Trick-or-Treating, because the Boy decided to take a shot at a deer, which took an hour and a half to determine that he did not hit it. Many of the houses that we’ve went to since I was a child were not there to hand out treats. As a matter of fact, there were just a handful of porch lights on in the entire town! I wonder if the economy had anything to do with it… We all dressed up, but I just could not quit giggling at Flex’s costume. By the time we got the picture taken, the Boy had already stripped off most of his costume.
I’m sure you’ve read through all of my randomness wondering why I’m thanking Andy Williams. I’m really not, but it’s hard to type with a sarcastic undertone. There was a damper put on my Halloween spirit by the one and only Andy Williams. See, we live about 40 minutes from Branson, which puts on one of the largest Christmas celebrations alive. The Andy Williams theater has been playing their Christmas commercials for nearly two weeks now. Our radio stations have switched to Christmas music. As much as I love Christmas, I would like to enjoy at least Halloween before getting prepared for the next holiday (actually I think we skipped Thanksgiving).
Our culture no longer allows us to slow down and enjoy anything. We move on to the next best thing before we’ve even celebrated the current. I am placing the brunt of my blame on retailers. I understand that they feel the need to keep things moving to keep shoppers interested, but who really needs to buy back to school supplies in June? I have to remember that I cannot get pool supplies at Walmart in July because they have already quit stocking them for the season. The funny thing? I can get them in January, with a foot of snow on the ground.
Today is November 1st, and I am going to finally get around to putting plastic on the windows to *hopefully* cut our heating bill this winter. With all electric heat in a poorly insulated older house, our bill gets very high in the winter (in case you’re wondering, high is $400+, monthly). Yeah, for that I could probably have a pretty nice car payment, or even close to a house payment! After we get that put up, I’m going to work on Christmas lists- now it’s time!

I about fell out of my chair when you said as high as $400/month for heating bill. I thought $200 (gas & electric combined) was bad for a 5 bedroom walkout was bad (and we have added insulation to the attic & had new windows installed a couple years ago, plus upgraded our heating/cooling system).
