You’ve probably figured out by now that we bought a house this winter.  An 1880’s (best we can guess), fully remodeled house.  The house was definitely designed for entertaining, as we have tons of outdoor space and three patios.  I still haven’t been able to count all of the firepits.  You would think that when remodeling for entertaining, the kitchen would be one of the top priorities.  Well, I think it’s safe to say that it wasn’t.  It looked like this:

See the paneled walls, drab brown cabinets, and coordinating copper marbled backsplash and counter?  The stove doesn’t fit securely between the cabinets, as a  matter of fact, there is no cabinet on the right side.

There was tan, stained carpet which flows freely from the bathroom to the kitchen to the laundry room.  Carpet in those areas is not even an option when you have children (or a husband).

I’m not a decorator by any means.  I am no good at it, I don’t like to do it, and every other reason under the sun.  However, my mom is artist, through and through.  She took full reigns on the kitchen project.  All I had to do was choose my colors. 

I love bright, funky stuff, she prefers more neutrals.  I decided that I wanted turquoise, orange, yellow, and pink.  The cabinets were still in amazing shape, with a little paint and hardware updates, they were going to suffice.  The cabinet doors were taken down, the original hinges spray painted silver, and new hardware purchased on Ebay (the CHEAPEST place to buy it).

The inside of the bottom cabinets were sturdy, just old.  We painted the ‘floors’ and laid peel and stick tile to create a fresh surface.

Countertop is extremely expensive, and these were sturdy and in very good shape, so we decided to decorate around them.  We can always paint or resurface them, but time was also a priority.

The hardest part was finding something inexpensive to place between the cabinets.  Because we hope to expand the kitchen at some point in the future, we needed cute and cheap.  I decided to go with a brick look.  Wallpaper was the perfect answer.  (More to come on the wallpaper later).

We also needed a cabinet to go on the side of the stove.  Mom ran across this vintage metal one at a flea market for $60!  She also snagged some barnwood look airstep vinyl at Lowe’s for the bathroom, kitchen, and utility room for just $1/sqf.  This retails for almost $6/sqf!

We don’t have the floor down yet, but Brad ripped up the carpet to see what was underneath.  We had a pleasant surprise which is working for the time being.. until we can get the other installed.

I don’t have a full total on the cost, because things such as the flooring and installation are divided among three rooms.  We purchased two rolls of paper and only used one.

What do you think?  Not too bad for a cosmetic fix! On the opposite wall is a huge, bright yellow china cabinet that holds dishes, cereals, bread, and snacks.  If it were a little neater, I’d have taken a photo of it, too.  Maybe when I clean it!

About 10 days ago, our ‘old’ house was burglarized.  We bought a new house in mid-December and because we own old house outright, we were taking our sweet time moving.  I’ve been trying to reduce clutter and get organized, and it’s so much easier to weed this stuff out piece by piece.

Our old home is in the middle of nowhere.  So much so that our only neighbor within eyesight is a man across the street (who is blind and unable to see any strange occurrences).  There is also an easement right through our front yard (referred to by a deputy as ‘goat trail’), that goes back into a rental mobile home (which has the only hidden access to our yard).   

When we moved, we knew the house would be unguarded, and there was a good chance a few things might get stolen- even though nothing had ever happened in the 13 years we were there.  I arrived at the home last week to find broken windows, the house ransacked, and hundreds of items missing.  The neighbor (from the rental mobile home) has now been charged with the crime (more to come on this later).

This has been a terrible experience to say the least but I’ve learned a few things along the way.  We are thankful that we carried the content insurance over until we were finished moving. 

We’ve spent days cleaning up the messes and writing the list of damages.  Yes, the insurance would have paid for a clean-up crew, but then we would have had no idea what was missing.  It was too windy to burn trash, so we had bags of items to get rid of and donate, and tubs of things we were storing over there.  These were all dumped into the floor.  Shelves were cleared out.  Every purse, box, folder, suitcase, and container was emptied.  

Most of the things taken were absolutely ridiculous.  They took anything from the yard that could be considered scrap metal, including my park bench and Brad’s air tank.  They took our push mower and the kid’s small swingset.  When they were inside, they took all of my jewelry (mistakenly left behind), the kids’ toys, ammunition, tv’s, and even took my huge container of bobby pins from Sally’s (the good ones they don’t make anymore)- kept the pins and left the container.

When the guy was caught (the first time- more to come later), he was wearing Brad’s hat.  Brad’s hat that was covered with the paint splatters from when we did my brother’s house. 

We knew what big items we had, but it’s so hard to remember all of the little stuff- and it adds up just as fast!  We have over $6,000 in losses in ‘little stuff’, and every morning I wake up thinking of something else.

Here are some things I’ve learned throughout the process:

1.  Keep ALL of your receipts on the items in your gift closet or stockpile.   Do you know how stupid I felt when I reported hundreds of dollars worth of missing cold medicine to the police?  (in the meth capitol of the country)  New in package items are a big target.  I had 40 CD’s I’d bought for the gift closet.  They were still sealed.  How do you explain that without a receipt?

2.  Inventory your DVDs, CDs, and Video Games.  There are plenty of forms online, keep a notebook, or even scan each title with your phone or ipad.  There will definitely be an inventory form in our new household binder printables (which will be up as soon as I get this mess finished).

3.  Take pictures of your yard.  The day I found the house burglarized, I knew something was missing when I pulled into the drive.  The yard looked empty.  I couldn’t place what should have been there!  They did find a few of our items at the scrap yard- pretty much destroyed.  A lot of those we found, I didn’t realize were even missing!  Our swimming pool ladder, chair legs, the push mower, etc.

4.  If you’re leaving change behind, dump it in the floor.  During the move, Katie decided to put all of her spare change into a shoe box.  It broke, spilling it all over her floor.  We hadn’t yet had time to get it all picked up.  They didn’t touch it (lazy thieves)- and there was close to $100 worth.  They did however, dump out the change that was already in containers. 

5.  Don’t keep many trash bags on hand.  After finding an empty trash bag box, I’m pretty sure that I paid for the bags that carried my stuff out of the house.

6.  If you are self employed, lock your receipts up.  I’ve got to get our taxes done, but it’s going to be nearly impossible if I can’t find all of our receipts.  Paperwork was dumped all over the place (most of my office stuff was still there while we renovate this one).  I’ve got 7 years of receipts to sift through and locate. 

7.  Don’t leave old bills expired debit/credit cards, or pay stubs in drawers.  We had old medical bills,  paystubs, old tax forms, and other identifying information laying around.  All of which had our social security numbers (like that’s really private information anymore).  Our bank’s deposit slips even show your full account number- which is ridiculous.  My old debit cards were in a drawer, and a couple of them had the same number as my current one.  It’s pretty easy to figure out the new expiration date for online payments.

8.  Keep a listing of all prescriptions on hand.  Sure you know what you’re currently taking, but what about those pills the doctor prescribed a year or so ago that are still in the medicine cabinet?  You forget they are there- but they are a big item in the eyes of a thief.

9.  Take pictures of your jewelry box.  I’ve always had a severe metal allergy and was unable to wear jewelry (aside from rings). In the past year, I’ve started to outgrow it.  I’ve bought tons of jewelry, but am having a really hard time remembering which pieces are gone.  I’m only able to claim those that I do remember, so I’m taking quite a loss on that.  My original wedding set was in the jewelry box, and it would have helped tremendously to have a photo to give to the police and pawn shops. 

10. Inventory your clothing (or hope your burglar isn’t the same size).  A lot of Brad’s clothes and shoes were missing- and it’s really hard to remember until you go to wear it. All of hits hats, except for his way-cool STL Cardinals golf visor were gone.  Apparently crooks don’t like visors.  

I’m really glad that most of the things taken are replaceable, but it’s still such a hassle.  I never thought of the additional time it would take to write damages, clean up messes, work with the insurance company, write reports for the prosecutor, etc.

We’ve just opened up the dates for February private and home parties!  All of the single session workshops are available in the home party format.  If you would like something you don’t see offered, send an email to classes@gatewaytosaving.com so we can put together a package for you.

Hosting a class with Gateway to Saving has never been easier.   All you need to do is pick a class, date, location, and invite your friends, family, or co-workers.

Choosing a Workshop

Gateway to Saving offers many courses that will assist you in stretching every dollar.  All classes are available for a home class.  A description of each class is available here.

Cost

To keep costs low (and allow the hostess to keep her sanity), each guest is charged the same registration fee of $15. 

Setting a Date

I am very flexible with dates and times for a home class.  In order to guarantee the date of your choice, I recommend that you book your class at least 4 weeks in advance.  All classes must be booked 3 weeks prior to the date of requested class.

Choosing a Location

You may hold the class at the location of your choice.  You may choose your home, business, or meeting room.  There are plenty of restaurants that will allow you to use a meeting room for a minimum food purchase.  Whichever option you choose, make sure that there is enough space for all of your guests!

Invitations

There are no restrictions on how many people you may invite.  There is a minimum of 8 guests* (not including hostess) at each class.

Payment Information

The hostess will be in charge of collecting all payments and submitting a check or money order 7 days before the class is scheduled to begin (14 days for weekend workshops).  Any workshop that has not submitted registration fees during these guidelines will automatically be canceled.

Hostess Benefits

The registration fee is waived for the hostess of each party.  Every Ultimate Couponing I hostess will receive a Gateway to Saving Coupon Binder, a downloadable copy of Ultimate Couponing | Your Guide to Slashing Your Grocery Bill, and two passes to any upcoming Gateway to Saving workshop.

Dear Diary,

Today I took a much needed shopping break.  The weather was beautiful, so I put the top down, cranked the hairband music up, and took off to the lake.  There’s nothing like making that drive with the wind blowing through my hair to relieve stress.

So you’re probably asking, “Why are you stressed, Alicia?’  Well, I can’t tell you everything, but the shortened story is that in the past month, we’ve bought a house, got robbed, and wrecked two of the three vehicles- not to mention that we’ve had a couple of holidays mixed in there somewhere.  The vehicles are smaller damages.  The funny thing is that we’ve never had an insurance claim in our lives.. now potentially three in a week?

I *might* be a little busy (and grouchy).  And I sure as heck don’t need to get sick.  Because I am a very healthy person, I should not be forced to stay home because all of the sick people feel compelled to go shopping.  Or drag their sick kids to the mall.

Facebook Status Update

Anonymous User:  I think we’re all dying.  We’ve had this stomach virus for over 3 weeks.  We’re to the point that to walk across the room, we have to stuff the bathroom towels in the seat of our pants. 10:15 a.m., Sunday.

SAME Anonymous User:  Well, just got back from church.  Thank goodness my prayer worked- no bodily noises were made during the prayer AND we didn’t stain the pews.  However, I did get sick twice.  I think we’re dying.  So glad we made it to church, though.  12:20 p.m., Sunday.

STILL The Same Anonymous User:  WALMART is P-A-C-K-E-D!  Can you believe that I just stopped in to buy some new blouses and eat the free samples and I’ve been in line for an hour?  It’s a good thing they keep those toys next to the register for the kids to play with.  Jimmy looks so cute slobbering all over that Disney Princess Pen!  4:25 p.m., Sunday.

Yup- Same Anonymous User:  Prayers needed for Linda, Bobby, Sally, Jim, Eric, Matthew, Emily, Jill, John, Melissa, and all of the other members of our church, along with my favorite Walmart employees. They have all contracted some sort of severe stomach virus.  Can you believe they were at church yesterday?  What will we do if we get it on top of the one we already have!  8:16 a.m. Monday

Don’t get me wrong, I fully understand that sick people sometimes have to get out.  For mandatory things like WORK, CHICKEN BROTH, and MEDICATION.  Not for shopping, a visit to a nursing home, or out to eat. 

ENTER BOOGER LADY.  If you were shopping at the Target in Osage Beach today and dripping snot on the floor, please stop reading or prepare to be offended. 

I was standing in the checkout with my four clearance items, staring off into space, when I hear it.  ‘Sniff, Sniff’.  Drugs are a pretty big problem around here, but not so much at Osage Beach, so I look up.  I see a well dressed, middle-aged woman reaching around me to grab a pack of Kleenex.  She accidentally brushed my arm, and politely said ‘Excuse Me’.  “I’d  better grab Kleenex, this cold just won’t go away!  I think I’ve got strep, but I’m too busy to go to the doctor.”  She then rubs the underside of her nose with her index finger- repeatedly.  When the cashier was done ringing her up, she picked up the stylus for the credit card machine to finish her transaction.  She alternated which hand she held the stylus with so that her index finger could continue plugging her nose. Once she finished, her teenage son piped up and said, “While we’re at the mall, can we swing by Aeropostale?”  SERIOUSLY?

Then it was my turn.  “Hi honey, did you find everything okay?”  “Yes, I did.”  “Your total is $4.86.”   I swiped my card, trying to figure out how to enter my PIN without touching the screen.  If only I had a spare stylus in my purse.  Who carries a spare stylus?  I normally have on of Katie’s DS ones in there, but I honestly had never thought of using it in this situation.  I never carry wipes- I really should.  One would have been perfect.  I gingerly touched the pad as if I were sticking my finger in a mousetrap.  Once I finished, I grabbed my bag and flew into the bathroom and vowed to come home and buy a set of emergency stylus.  I found these on Amazon: 3 Pack of Universal Touch Screen Stylus Pen (Red + Black + Silver)  for only 86¢ with FREE SHIPPING. 

The moral of this ridiculous story?  Stay home when you’re sick.  Have you watched Contagion?  I’ve not, but I can only imagine that this is how a plague that wipes out the entire population is spread.  You have the power to stop the spread of disease.  DO IT!

We’ve added another new workshop to the lineup! 

The Grocery Budget Bootcamp is a three session workshop that will be held on February 9th, 16th, and 23rd.

So many of you need hands-on information, and this workshop is not going to disappoint you. While many of our other workshops are set up in a lecture format, this one will take a hands-on instructional format. Attendance will be capped at 25 registrants per sessions so that I may provide you with my undivided attention.
